Hi all,
For the last 1.5 years I have been working on getting my 1979 Toyota Celica GT into operational condition. Ever since buying it (which was an adventure in itself) I have been plagued with problems. It didn't idle well, wouldn't accelerate smoothly, started rough. In the span of a year I have fixed, broke and fixed problems. In a nut shell this is what I have done in roughly chronological order:
1) Timing
2) fuel filter
3) rebuilt the head with JB weld
4) new cam shaft
5) new head
6) new engine
7) Fuel pump oil pressure shutoff bypass
8) New rims/tires
9) new distributor
10) removal of aftermarket carb, soaked in cleaner, re-assembled and put back together
11) New fuel pump
And that is where I am at now. I am currently mounting an after market fuel pump to ensure that the engine is getting the appropriate PSI for fuel. After this I still have to:
(in no real order)
1) Compression check
2) vaccume leak check
3) replace suspension on all corners
4) new seats
5) Seatbelts
6) muffler
7) tires
8) Oil seal on differential
This car has been fun to own so far because of the learning experience. I have taught myself more than I could have ever hoped to learn without having an old car to tinker with. This car also keeps me engaged because it has a lot of potential (in my opinion). The car currently has the following modifications that make it interesting:
1) 22R engine (stock was a 20R)
2) Weber highrise carb
3) single piece drive shaft
4) Supra rear end (which means disc breaks on all four corners)
5) Completely stripped interior
I will post some pics when I get a chance, but my hope it to be able to drive it in this seasons up coming autoX events. I am not looking forward to the fact that I will be competing in the same class as the guys with the hopped up subarus though... sigh.... anyone have a 1UZ kicking around?
