The Dawson Creek Autocross Club wrapped up its second season last Sunday with a final event at the Encana Events Centre.
In its second year, the DC Autocross Club began running events in Fort St. John, and after a season of 13 events in both cities, the regional autocross club is hoping to expand even more next season.
“It was pretty positive,” club president Tri Nguyen said about expanding. “We were able to put the cities together and some people would travel between the two events. We made it open between our members to make it either/or, so it actually expanded more venues for our members and added more to our roster.”
We’re not even sure what’s going to happen yet [next season],” he added. “We might even start doing it in Grande Prairie as well so we could do tri-cities.”
On average, about 20 drivers of all backgrounds come out to races, but those numbers are still low mostly due to the fact people don’t understand what autocross is.
“People are still trying to grasp the concept of what autocross is so we could definitely use improvement,” Nguyen said.
“It’s something that’s fairly new. They know it’s out there but sometimes they need to see the event; when they actually see it, it’s quite eye opening. We just encourage people to come out.”
All different sorts of cars, from station wagons to corvettes, hit up pylon-lined tracks in solo time trials once or twice a month. Those with the fastest track time at the end of the day top the list. While some people worry their cars aren’t fast enough, Nguyen says it’s about getting out there no matter what you drive and having fun.
“Sometimes people think their car’s not fast enough but once we get them out on the track once or twice they’re hooked,” he said.
The autocross club will sit down for a meeting next week to decide what’s coming down the pipes in the next year.
“We’re hoping to get more venues for a few more events and possibly even doing it in winter time for winter rallies,” Nguyen explained. “You don’t have to necessarily have snow tires, you can have a lot of fun in the snow. Guys are requesting trucks for events or maybe ATVs. We’re looking at it, but we’re not going to say just yet.”
Times from last Sunday’s final race of the year are as follows:
Bob (Suburu WRX), 42.85
Brian (Suburu WRX), 44.09
Chase (Honda Civic), 44.89
Mark (Chevy Corvette), 47.39
Tri (Nissan Skyline), 48.38
Dave (Ford Mustang), 48.41
Darwin (Dodge SRT Neon), 48.56
Tim (N/A), 49.15
Shannon (Mitsubishi Legnum), 52.77
